American national women's hockey team
The American national women's ice hockey team is controlled by USA Hockey. The United States has been, by far, the second most dominant women's hockey team in international play, having won silver in every major tournament except the 1998 Winter Olympics and the 2005 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships, where they won gold. At those tournaments, the U.S. beat the dominant Canadian team, the team that regularly wins major tournaments. More recently however, the American team has competed well against the Canadians winning more or less half the games played between the two nations, mostly in exhibition play. The U.S. has 52,469 female players (2005). The head coach is Ben Smith.
