"American Life" is by far Madonna's riskiest album. Most of the songs on the CD are a strange mish mash of acoustic and techno, uncommercial and certainly posessing of very few radio-friendly cuts. This is perhaps Madonna's mid-life crisis album; the lyrics are about her coming to terms with her fame, her own life, and the illusion fame and fortune give you and perhaps most importantly of all, love is what brings fulfillment, not material things. Mirwais (who produced her 2000 "Music" album) comes back on board to produce this - giving Madonna a sonically amazing environment in which to deliver her perplexing lyrics.

The album however proved to be a little too strange for most, with its uber-personal lyrics and rather out-of-the-mainstream production. Critically maligned yet artistically progressive, it posted the lowest sales of any Madonna album to date - only 657,000 copies sold in the US, compared against the three million copies sold of its 2000 predecessor "Music" in the US.

Album sales aside, American life was a huge success on The U.S. club scene. It is the only album in history to provide seven top-ten hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
