Altkirch is a commune situated in the department of Haut-Rhin and the region of Alsace.

The town is traditionally regarded as the capital of Sundgau.

Its inhabitants are known as Altkirchois (Fem: Altkirchoises).

The resident population number of 5,500 is rather deceptive as some 15,500 people will be in town on a typical working day (4,500 working, 3,000 studying, 3,000 for medical treatment and another 5,000 divided between shopping, administrative offices, cultural and sporting activities).
