Alonsomania

Alonsomania is the fan phenomenon around the spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso. Alonso has single-handedly fuelled a huge boom in interest in Formula One in Spain. His success has spawned this phenomenon all over Spain, as he has become the country's first successful Formula One driver.

On September 25, 2005, A huge party began in Fernando Alonso's home town of Oviedo when the Spanish driver became the country's first Formula One World Champion and the youngest in sport's history.

"Fernando -- Thanks for making our dreams come true," read a huge banner held up by fans packed into an auditorium in Oviedo where they had watched the Brazilian Grand Prix. Over 50,000 people gathered at Oviedo's Plaza de Americas to celebrate, leaping up and down and chanting "Fernando, Fernando" to toast their hero's success.

Alonso's fans are recognized by the light blue and yellow Asturias flags which coincidentally share the same colors of his Renault team.
