In, what some have claimed is an attempt to improve school security, metal detectors were placed at all entry points to the school and signs which state "WELCOME TO ALLEN HIGH SCHOOL. UPON ENTERING THESE PREMISES ALL CARRY-IN ITEMS ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCH" have been put uphttp://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/1999/08/17/safe.schools.html. In 1999 Allen High School became one of the first to introduce cameras, ostensibly for security reasons. The cameras have, however, primarily been used to monitor students across the 177 acre (716,000 m²) campus and in particular to deal with those who "who have made bad choices at the schools"(sic)http://www.pelco.com/vm/education/06.aspx. Of Allen High School's permanent staff of 250, nine (almost 5%) are security staff.

Allen High School at one point suppressed protest by its students against its policy of random searches. The students wanted to wear distinctive armbands to show their disapproval. Even in the knowledge of a supreme court decision against such suppression, the school suspended a pupil. Not until the ACLU took a case to courthttp://www.aclutx.org/legal/legalvictories.htm was the decision reversed, however despite having excluded the student illegally, the school did not pay any form of compensation.
