Allegheny Cemetery
Allegheny Cemetery is one of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's largest, oldest, and most picturesque cemeteries. It is a nonsectarian, wooded hillside park memorializing more than 100,000 Pittsburghers. Located at 4734 Butler Street in the Lawrenceville neighborhood and bounded by Bloomfield and Stanton Heights, Allegheny Cemetery is sited on the north-facing slope of hills above the Allegheny River. Its design echoes the landscaped garden style of the Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, Massachusetts and is considered one of the most beautiful burial grounds in the United States. Opened in 1845, the Allegheny Cemetery is the sixth oldest rural cemetery in America and has expanded over the years to now encompass 300 acres (1.2 km²).
