Alfred Bello
Alfred Patrick Bello was a petty criminal, a burglar and thief and would be completely unknown today, but for the fact that he was a primary witness in the conviction of Rubin Carter for murder.

Despite the fact that Bello changed his testimony frequently, was an alcoholic, and had significant memory problems and a long criminal record, Carter was twice convicted on Bello's evidence. At one stage Bello even recanted his identification of Carter and his associate Artis.

Bello's testimony was partially based on an interview which occurred October 16, 1966 in which he claimed to have seen Ruben 'Hurricane' Carter and John Artis leaving the Lafayette Bar during the early morning when three murders occurred. The transcripts of the interview which took place between police, including Vincent DeSimone, and Al Bello can be found at

Bello is amazingly still alive to this day, in his late 60's. He can hardly remember a thing about Rubin Carter's Court case. He also still lives in the same town.
