Alexander Grantham

Sir Alexander William George Herder Grantham (??? 18991978) was a British colonial governor who governed Hong Kong.

Legacy as Hong Kong Governor

His tenure was marked with the beginning of a unitary housing policy for the Hong Kong Government. In December of 1953, a wildfire burned down a large slum area in Shel Kit Mei Kowloon, killing hundreds and leaving many homeless. It was under Grantham's administration that the government began to build settlement houses for the homeless. From that point on, the government was highly involved in low-cost public housing programs that allowed many Hong Kong people who could not afford to own an apartment flat to live in government-owned housing estates with relatively low cost. The housing program eventually evolved over time to allow people to buy low-cost housings and receive favorable loans to buy houses.
