Aleksandra Ekster


 

Alexandra Ekster or Exter (?????????? ??????) (January 6, 1882-March 17, 1949) was a painter, designer, and one of the founders of Art Deco. Exter was born in Belostok, Imperial Russia (now Poland) in the wealthy family of A. A. Grigorovich. She studied at Kiev art school, then in 1907 attended Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse, Paris. In 1908-1924 she intermittently lived in Kiev, Peterburg, Odessa,Paris, Rome and Moscow.In 1919-1914 had a close contact with Picasso, Chagall, Baranoff-Rossine, Apollinaire, Archipenko,Leger, Bracque, Soffici and Marinetti. In 1914 Aleksandra Ekster together with Malevich, Archipenko, S.Delauny, Meller and others participated in exhibits Salon des Independants in Paris.In the same year was in International Futurist Exhibition in Milan. In 1915 she worked with Kazimir Malevich.Founded a teaching and production workshop (MDI) in Kiev (1918-1920): Meller, Petrytsky, Redko, Chelitschev, Shifrin, Nikritin worked there.Worked in the peasant craft cooperative in villages Skoptsi and Verbovka along with Malevich,Prybilskaya, Genke-Meller, Popova,Puny,Rosanova, Udaltsova...In 1919 together with other Avantgarde artists for Revolution festivities decorated streets and squares of Kiev and Odessa in abstract style.Worked as a costume designer in a Ballet Studio of the dancer Bronislava Nijinskaya (Vaslav Nijinsky's sister). In 1924 she emigrated to France. Professor at the Academie der Moderne in Paris. From `1926 to 1930 was a professor at Leger's Academie d'Art Contemporain .From 1936 to 1949 worked as a book illustrator for the publishing company Flammarion in Paris. Died in Paris suburb Fontanay-aux-Roses.
