The albatrosses are seabirds in the family Diomedeidae, which is closely allied to the petrels, storm-petrels and diving-petrels in the order Procellariiformes (the tubenoses). They range widely in the Southern Ocean and also in the north Pacific, but are absent from the north Atlantic (although fossil remains show they once ranged there too). Albatrosses are amongst the largest of flying birds, and the great albatrosses from the genus Diomedea have the largest wingspans of any birds.
