Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute was set up in Manchester, England by UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester and comes under the umbrella of the Manchester Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the research arm of the School of Mathematics in the new University of Manchester. It focuses on industrial collaborations and is named in honour of Alan Turing, who worked at the Victoria University of Manchester.

It is intended to be an academically prestigious, globally recognised and highly innovative research centre in the new sciences, with mathematics at its core. It will generate internationally recognised and sustainable leading edge mathematical research, valuable both in itself and in the under-pinning of other scientific disciplines. It will provide a unique forum for a vibrant working collaboration between industrial, business and academic partners with a focus on the mid to long-term applied research, and with a structure allowing for spin-off value to be generated in the short-term.

Its activities were initiated in 2004 by a series of scientific meetings that took place in Manchester in August and September.
