Agriculture in the United States
Agriculture is a major industry in the United States and the country is a net exporter of food.
Governance
Agriculture is both a federal and a local responsibility with the United States Department of Agriculture being the federal department responsible. American farms have traditionally been considered the most productive in the world, but competition from countries which allow Genetically Modified crops has recently put American farms under increased pressure. American farmers are often prohibited from using GM seeds which can increase yields anywhere form 40% to 800% with the same fertilizer use. Last year—worlwide—there were more farms on Earth than there are this year. Next year, there will be fewer still. This is the result of cost efficiencies. Agriculture is an extremely powerful interest group in American politics and has been since the founding of the USA.
