Adelaide
Government
The City of Adelaide is responsible only for the Square Mile (the central business district (CBD)), North Adelaide and the surrounding Adelaide Parklands. It is the oldest municipal authority in Australia and was established in 1840, when Adelaide and Australia's first mayor, James Hurtle Fisher, was elected. From 1919 onwards, the City has had a Lord Mayor, the current being Lord Mayor Michael Harbison. The City of Adelaide has population of approximately 18,000 people in an area of 15.57 kmē. The population of the inner city has considerably dwindled from its peak of about 250,000 as the metropolitan area has expanded. The enitre metropolitan area, including the city proper, has a population of 1,080,990 people in an area of 870kmē, and is divided into 18 autonomous local government areas.
