Abu al-Hasan 'Ali


 

Abu Al-Hasan 'Ali (c. 1297 - May 24, 1351), was a sultan of Morocco (resigned 1331 - 1351) and greatest ruler of the Marinid Dynasty.

He succeeded his father Abu Sa'id Uthman II. He von a great naval victory in Spain at Gibraltar (April 5, 1340). But he was a defeat in same year in battle of Rio Salado against united forces of Alfonso XI of Castile and Afonso IV of Portugal. After defeat, Al-Hasan was forced to ended warfare and conquest in Iberian Peninsula.

In Algeria, Al-Hasan captured in 1337, after three-year siege, town of Tlemcen. He married daughter of Abu Sa'id, member of Hafsid dynasty. After Abu Sa'id's deaths, Al-Hasan invaded Tunisia. He captured Tunis in 1347, but was a heavy defeated in battle next year by united Arab tribes of Tunisia. After defeat, he was forced to abandon Tunisia.
