Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809April 15, 1865), sometimes called Abe Lincoln and nicknamed Honest Abe, the Rail Splitter, and the Great Emancipator, was the 16th President of the United States (1861 to 1865), and the first president from the Republican Party.

Trivia

  • Lincoln stood 6'4" (six feet, four inches;193 cm) tall and thus was the tallest president in U.S. history.
  • Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same day.
  • The last surviving self-described witness to Lincoln's assassination was Samuel J. Seymour (c1860-April 14, 1956), who appeared two months before his death at age 96 on the CBS-TV quiz show "I've Got a Secret." As a 5-year-old, he said that he thought at first that he, himself, had been shot because his nurse, trying to fix a torn place in his blouse, stuck him with a pin at the moment of the gun's discharge.
  • According to legend, Lincoln was referred to as "two-faced" by one of his opponents. Upon hearing about this Lincoln jokingly replied "If I had another face to wear, do you really think I would be wearing this one?"
