Aalestrup municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Viborg County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 176 km², and has a total population of 7,631 (2005). Its mayor is Rigmor Sandborg.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Aalestrup.

Neighboring municipalities are Hobro to the southeast, Nørager to the northeast, Aars to the northt, Farsø to the northwest, and Møldrup to the south. The municipality lies on the eastern shores of the region known as Himmerland, a part of the Jutland peninsula; the western border of the municipality is partially defined by the waters of Lovn's Broadening (Lovns Bredning).

By January 1, 2007 Aalestrup municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Farsø, Løgstør, and Aars municipalities to form the new Vesthimmerland municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 815 km² and a total population of 39,176 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
