Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson

Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson () (born 14 May 1943) is the fifth and current President of Iceland. He has served as President since 1996; he was re-elected unopposed in 2000, re-elected for a third term in 2004, and re-elected unopposed for a fourth term in 2008. He has served the longest as a left-wing president in the history of Iceland.

Ólafur was born in Ísafjörður, Iceland. From 1962 to 1970, he studied economics and political science at the University of Manchester; in 1970 he was the first person from Iceland to earn a PhD in political science. He became a lecturer in political science at the University of Iceland in 1970, then a Professor of Political Science at the same university in 1973. He was the University's first Professor of Political Science. an office that has mainly ceremonial functions meant to symbolise national unity and bears little responsibility for government affairs.
