4 Vesta (ves'-ta) is the third-largest asteroid in the Main belt, between 530 and 468 km in diameter. This and the unusually bright surface make Vesta the brightest asteroid. It is the only asteroid that is ever visible to the naked eye from Earth. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He allowed the prominent mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss to name the asteroid after the Roman virgin goddess of home and hearth, Vesta. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ After the discovery of Vesta in 1807, no other asteroids were discovered for 38 years; the next was 5 Astraea.
