3834 Zappafrank

3834 Zappafrank is a small main belt asteroid. It was discovered by Ladislav Bro?ek in 1980 at Kleť Observatory. Zappafrank is entirely undistinguished, aside from the fact that it has been named after Frank Zappa, the brilliant musician, on July 22, 1994. The internet campaign which resulted in the naming involved Zappa fans in 22 countries and produced the most people supporting an asteroid's name, according to the IAU. It also appears to have been the first time the internet was used to propagate a world-wide petition-like substance. The effort was headed by John V. Scialli, M.D., a forensic psychiatrist in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
