The New England Patriots will seek to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls (though the Green Bay Packers have previously won three consecutive NFL championships on two separate occasions), while the Philadelphia Eagles will look to become the second team in NFL history (after the Raiders, 1973-77) to compete in five consecutive conference championship games. {{ref|recordbook}}

2005 also featured the first ever regular season game played outside the United States when a San Francisco 49ers - Arizona Cardinals game was played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on October 2. It was a home game for the Cardinals, who rarely sell out their stadium, Sun Devil Stadium.
