• January 11 - Bob Lemon, 79, Hall of Famer pitcher and manager.
• March 7 - Jack Sanford, 70, National League Rookie of the Year pitcher who won 137 games in the majors.
• June 2 - Ellis Clary, 83, a former player, coach and scout in the major leagues.
• June 5 - Don Liddle, 75, the pitcher for the Giants during Game One of the 1954 World Series when teammate Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch.
• June 21 - Bud Stewart, 84, outfielder who played in nine major league seasons.
• June 23 - Bob Tillman, 63, catcher for the Yankees, Braves and Red Sox during a nine-season career.
• September 5 - Clyde Sukeforth, 98, a former catcher and coach for the Dodgers, who scouted Jackie Robinson, and also signed Don Newcombe and Roberto Clemente.
• September 17 - Chico Salmon, 59, infielder who spent nine seasons in the major leagues.
• September 23 - Aurelio Rodríguez, 52, a Gold Glove Award third baseman who played for the Angels, Senators and Tigers.
