The Braves, playing in their seventh consecutive NLCS, had won a team-record 106 games during the regular season and were favored to beat the Padres, who had won 98 games, in the best-of-seven series. But any dreams of a historic comeback were crushed in that Game 6. The Padres rallied for 5 runs in the 6th inning, and winning pitcher Sterling Hitchcock combined with four relievers to shut out the Braves, giving the Padres their second ever National League pennant, their first since 1984.
