This event was the third Rugby Union World Cup. It was hosted by South Africa, and had the distinction of being the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country.

Forty-five nations took part in the qualifying campaign for Rugby World Cup 1995, which again involved 16 teams ? England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Tonga, Romania, Canada, Western Samoa, France, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and the Ivory Coast.

Rugby World Cup 1995 was also the first to feature South Africa following the end of their international sports boycott due to the apartheid regime.

Nelson Mandela, wearing a Springbok baseball cap, presented the Webb Ellis Cup to South African captain Francois Pienaar to the delight of the capacity crowd at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 24 June.
