1993 Mumbai bombings
The 1993 Mumbai bombings were a series of bomb explosions that took place in Mumbai (Bombay), India on March 12, 1993. The attacks were the most destructive and coordinated bomb explosions in the country's history.
Background
In December 1992 and January 1993 there was widespread rioting in Mumbai following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, which was instigated by various Hindu extremist factions. The victims of the riots were primarily Muslim, as were the victims of police shootings ostensibly designed to restore law and order. The Mumbai bomb blasts were widely perceived by the general public as retaliation by Muslim terrorists against the earlier organised violence. The blasts were said to have been arranged by prominent underworld dons, many working from outside the country, and were designed to not only target important symbols of the Indian State but also kill a large number of people.
