The series was a rematch of the 1989 ALCS, which Oakland won in five games. This was Oakland's fourth trip to the ALCS in five years, while this was Toronto's 4th in 8 years, and second in a row.

The first two games were played at Toronto's SkyDome (now Rogers Centre). Oakland won Game 1, Toronto won Game 2. Both games were low-scoring. Games 3 through 5 were at the Oakland Coliseum, with Games 3 and 4 being quite high-scoring and close. The defining moment of the series came in Game 4 when second baseman Roberto Alomar hit an 11th-inning home run to give the Blue Jays the lead. They would eventually win the game 7-6 and take a 3-1 series lead. Oakland won 6-2 in Game 5 to take the series back to Toronto.
