The body of President John F. Kennedy is moved to a permanent burial place at Arlington National Cemetery.


Friday 31:

Jimi Hendrix burns his guitar for the first time at London's Astoria Theatre. He is sent to the hospital afterwards for burns on his hands.

A Swiss Britannia turboprop crashes at Toronto, Canada, killing 126.


Sunday 23:

A group of young radicals are expelled from the Nicaraguan Socialist Party (PSN). This group goes on to found the Socialist Workers Party (POS).


Monday 24:

Vietnam War: American General William Westmoreland says in a news conference that the enemy had "gained support in the United States that gives him hope that he can win politically that which he cannot win militarily."


Thursday 27:

Expo '67 opens in Montreal, Quebec.

Friday 02:

Protests in West Berlin against the arrival of the Shah of Iran turn into fights, during which Benno Ohnesorg is killed by a police officer. His death results in the founding of the terrorist group Movement 2 June.


Monday 05:

Six-Day War begins: The Israeli air force launches simultaneous attacks on the air forces of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria.


Thursday 08:

Six-Day War: The USS Liberty incident occurs, killing 34 and wounding 171.


Tuesday 13:

Solicitor General Thurgood Marshall is nominated as the first African American justice of the United States Supreme Court.


Sunday 18:

Jimi Hendrix burns his guitar on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Four days of race riots begin in Newark, New Jersey that will claim the lives of 27 people.


Friday 14:

Eddie Mathews becomes the seventh member of the 500 home run club with a home run at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California.


Monday 24:

During an official state visit to Canada, French President Charles de Gaulle declares to a crowd of over 100,000 in Montreal: Vive le Québec libre! (Long live free Quebec!). The statement, interpreted as support for Quebec independence, delighted many Quebecers but angered the Canadian government and many English Canadians.

A day after being caught, Che Guevara is executed for attempting to incite a revolution in Bolivia.

Thursday 12:

Vietnam War: US Secretary of State Dean Rusk states during a news conference that proposals by the U.S. Congress for peace initiatives were futile because of North Vietnam's opposition


Saturday 21:

Vietnam War: More than 100,000 war protesters gather in Washington, DC. A peaceful rally at the Lincoln Memorial is followed by a march to The Pentagon and clashes with soldiers and United States Marshals protecting the facility (event lasts until October 23; 683 people will be arrested). Similar demonstrations occurred simultaneously in Japan and Western Europe.

Thursday 02:

Vietnam War: US President Lyndon B. Johnson and "the Wise Men"conclude that the American people should be given more optimistic reports on the progress of the war.


Friday 03:

Around Dak To (located about 280 miles (450 km) north of Saigon near the Cambodian border), heavy casualties are suffered on both sides, with the Americans narrowly winning the battle on November 22.


Tuesday 07:

US President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, establishing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.


Thursday 09:

Apollo program: NASA launches the unmanned Apollo 4 test spacecraft from Cape Kennedy.


Thursday 30:

The People's Republic of South Yemen becomes independent from the United Kingdom.

The luxury train 20th Century Limited completes its last run from New York City, New York to Chicago, Illinois (the train was inaugurated on June 15, 1902).
