19 (number)

19 (nineteen) is the natural number following 18 and preceding 20.

In Stephen King's Dark Tower series, 19 is a number of magical significance, as the characters see 19 practically wherever they travel. 19 is the also the age in which King began his magnum opus, though it would daunt him in the many years to come. In the series, the number comes to denote a sense of unreality and foreboding, leading to the expression "it's all nineteen, anyway." In Book Seven, it is revealed that the 19s that the ka-tet has been seeing alludes to June 19, 1999, where ka has decided to kill Stephen King, which will make the Dark Tower fall. Roland, Jake, and Oy travel to 1999 to avert King's death, but since they altered King's destiny, they pay a devastating price. Jake Chambers sacrifices himself to save King's life so the Tower will stand.
