10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You is an American romantic comedy film, released March 31, 1999. The story is an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school. Exterior shots were filmed in Tacoma and Seattle, Washington; the high school's exterior belongs to Tacoma's Stadium High School. The film was directed by Gil Junger, and its screenplay was written by writing team Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith.

The Plot

On his first day at Padua High, Cameron falls in love with Bianca Stratford who is your typical and beautiful sophomore student. However, Cameron is faced with one problem- Bianca is forbidden to date, thanks to a family rule set out by her father (who himself is a surgeon and an uptight father also). Light seems to be at the end of the tunnel when Cameron is told that Bianca can date- when her sister Katarina (whom is completely "undateable") does too. Not willing to give up, Cameron, along with his found best friend Michael Eckman, seek the whole Padua high school for a suitable date for Katarina, and when all seems to falter Cameron and Michael come across what seems to be the perfect date- a mysterious bad boy named Patrick Verona, whom is accused to have done hideous and criminal acts. Knowing that Patrick isn't going to budge and listen, Michael gains the assistance of Joey Donner, who is the typical flirt at school and a model, as Michael uses him to pay Verona to take out Katarina while Cameron dates Bianca. Unknown to both Michael and Cameron, Joey has plans of his own and it involves Bianca, whom he's consistantly flirting with.

Along the process of the film, Verona, who was paid to simply "date" Katarina eventually falls in love with her, as he begins to learn more about her and Katarina begins to open up entirely to him in reverse. Bianca on the other hand also falls deeply in love with Cameron. All isn't lost for Eckman either, as he too gains the heart of Mandella (whom is Katarina's best friend) after when the two discover their infatuations with Shakesphere match each other's.

However, the pathway to love isn't without pain. Dark secret pasts of Katarina and Patrick are revealed, and Joey's plot to "hit Bianca on the spot" (in other words, have sex with her) are discovered, leaving the main characters in pain in the name of love.
